Buying into branding myths could be costing your business more than you realize.
Branding myths can be easy to fall for and if you believe them then your business could suffer. Whether you’re just getting started or have been in business for years, it’s time to rethink what branding really means and how it affects your bottom line. Let’s bust a few common branding myths and uncover why thoughtful, strategic branding matters more than ever.
Branding Myth #1: It’s just a logo
This might be one of the most common branding myths. When anyone says the word “branding” you probably immediately think of a logo – and you wouldn’t be wrong. A logo is the visual part of your brand and is often the part business owners focus on. But you also have to think about your brand’s story, personality, voice and your messaging. Ideally, all of this is developed at the same time along with brand strategy and planning as part of the branding process.
Branding Myth #2: Small businesses don’t need it
The myth that branding is only for bigger businesses could not be farther from the truth. Small businesses should be focusing on branding even harder than the big guys. It’s more important for a small business to create that connection with customers because we have so much more to lose. Without the big budgets to pay for impressions and increase reach, us little guys should think about branding as our personal connection to our customers and the single most important investment in our business.
Branding Myth #3: You only do it once
This last common branding myth I want to talk about is one business owners often get stuck on. Many people think that you can’t or shouldn’t rework or change a brand once you’ve set it. If you pay attention though, you’ll see that every big brand out there has invested in rebranding over the years. Pepsi, Starbucks, Apple …. they all know that as a brand grows and evolves they need to freshen up their visuals, refocus messaging, rethink their mission statement or adjust their values to match current social trends. Most consumers connect more deeply to brands who’s values match their own and our values change with each new generation.
Have branding myths been holding you back?
If you fall into the pattern of thinking that your brand is only the visuals, that it never changes or that your small business doesn’t need to invest in branding, you’re setting your brand up to fail.
In 2024, small businesses that invested in consistent branding reported a 23% increase in revenue. It’s also important to note that 81% of consumers said they need to trust a brand before they would buy from them.
